The general location of this hike is in and around the St Vrain River North Fork canyon west of Button Rock Dam and east of Allenspark.  It is fairly remote and I could find only one instance of a CMC trip here which was in 2008.  The on trail hike starts near Big Elk Meadow on the canyon north side and drops 900 feet down Coulson Gulch to the river.  There we pick up the old Button Rock Trail (the east end of which is at the dam) to head upstream.  Eventually we return back out of the canyon via a side drainage on what the USFS calls a "vague trail requiring navigation skills". Back on the canyon rim we follow Johnny Park road to our start point to close the loop.  This road is very rough and narrow and is no different than trail hiking.  My scout today (Jan 1) showed dry country with no snow and no precip is forecast this week.  This is a good time to do the hike because in the summer Johnny Park road is open to motorized recreation but now the gates are closed.

My original elevation gain calculation was incorrect at 1000 ft.  The correct gain is 1600 ft and that is now shown in this trip description.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
