Location

This is a strenuous "D" level hike - you must be able to hike a minimum of 14 miles plus 5,300 feet of gain at elevations of 14,267 and 14,270 feet.

Meeting Location: At 6:00 am we'll meet at the Woolly Mammoth lot, across from the Exxon gas station, on the west end of  the "Dinosaur" Park 'n Ride at the intersection of I-70 and U.S. 40 (just west of C-470) These Dinosaur lots are sometimes called the "Hogback Lots" and are usually accessed via the I-70 Morrison exit (#259) on the west side of Denver.

Directions to Trailhead: We'll take I-70 west, from the Dinosaur lots, to Bakerville exit 221. We'll start our hike from Bakerville so as to ensure we have enough mileage and elevation gain for an Easy "D" rating. This rating is based on reaching at least one of the two peaks.

Details

This is a strenuous "D" level hike - you must be able to hike a minimum of 14 miles plus 4,400 feet of elevation gain at elevations of 14,267 and 14,270 feet.

This is long day so please be prepared!

This hike/climb is open to all who are capable of at least a 14 mile hike and over 4,400 feet of elevation gain. This will be a long but fun hike from Bakerville to Grays and/or Torreys. Pace will be moderate and steady with breaks as needed along the way. Pace should be around 1,000 feet per hour, or more, with about 1.5 miles per hour, or more. Our goal will be to climb both peaks but, of course, safety comes first!

On the way up to Bakerville we'll stop at Downieville for short break.

On the way down from Bakerville we will consider Beau Jo's, The Tommy Knocker, or another after-hike stop in Idaho Springs depending on the group's desires and our time back to Denver.

Notes

This is a strenuous "D" level hike - you must be able to hike a minimum of 14 miles plus 4,400 feet of elevation gain at elevations of 14,267 and 14,270 feet.

Although our pace will be moderate, with breaks as needed, I would like to keep the group together without any excessive slowing down. Our goal will be to climb both peaks but, of course, safety comes first!

Warm clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, and sturdy footwear are recommended - possibly rain gear, too, but we will not risk lightning exposure. I will be happy to sign you off on an easy "D" hike iff (if and only if) we make it to at least one of the two summits. We will not risk weather or other safety issues for this goal.

Note, in years past we've encountered ground blizzards, snow, rain, lightning, heavy winds, and hot days (not all at the same time!) on this route in September. So, please be prepared!

Also, please be prepared to properly reimburse your driver for mileage if you're in a carpool. Please use the current CMC recommended carpooling rate/formula.
