BMS Colorado Alpine Snow Mountaineering

**Pre-Requisites: Wilderness Fundamentals**  The "Wild Fun" class covers concepts that will be expected knowledge for this course and will reference the text provided from this class!

**Recommended: Avalanche Level 1** Subsequent trips may require this course

Planting the snow seeds early this year to get folks prepped and excited for the spring snow mountaineering season.

Alpine Snow Mountaineering course is two class lectures. Our discussions include evaluating weather and snow conditions, terrain and avalanche risk assessment, gear, trip planning, using crampons and proper climbing techniques, snow travel including proper use of ice axe, self-arrest, glissading, determining slope angles, and route finding. We will discuss and mock demonstrate snow anchors and rope techniques if time allows.  To earn the BMS certificate for this class, you will have to attend one of a number of skills practice trips we put on for all members early in the spring season.

Class Dates:

Tuesday, December 11 6:30PM - 9:00PM

Thursday, December 13 6:30PM - 9:00PM

Colorado Springs Firestation #20  -  6755 Rangewood Dr, Colorado Springs, CO 80918

Future Practice Days:

Future club trips will be organized for club members to practice and review what they know.  This is continued good practice for safely travelling in the mountains.  Note that Avalanche 1 may be a prerequisite for those trips.

There will be optional follow-up CMC Trips.  Skills learned in this class are typically requisite for participation.

Refunds are issued for cancellations made up to two weeks prior to the start of the program. There is a $10.00 cancellation fee. NO REFUNDS IN LAST TWO WEEKS OR FOR NO SHOWS

Basic Equipment list strongly recommended to have time of class.  Climbing without these is dangerous, and often the equpiment is necessary for a successful trip.:

Helmet

Mountaineering Axe

Mountaineering Boots (crampon compatible)

Crampons (Horizontal – glacier/snow travel)

Glacier glasses or dark sunglasses

A more detailed list will be sent out to you after registration.
