John's backcountry theme for 2019 is to hike all 38 wilderness areas in Colorado. This trip intends to bag Lost Creek Wilderness Area.

Ben Tyler Trail climbs quickly on switchbacks for the first 500', then eases up a bit until entering Lost Creek Wilderness Area at the 1.4 mile point, where the trail also meets Ben Tyler Creek. We plan to climb up Ben Tyler Gulch to where the trail crosses the creek at around 9250', or 1,000' gain from the trailhead. If we reach the creek, this will be our turn point, to go back down the same way.

The trail was named for Ben Tyler, who lived with his family in the gulch that bears his name. He operated a lumber mill during gold rush days, hauling the sawed timber over the ridge and into Fairplay. In 1903 a 3,000 acre fire burned up and out the end of Ben Tyler Gulch and is responsible for the huge aspen grove dominating the valley.

Bring traction and snowshoes. This trail is on the north side of Shawnee Peak and is sometimes blocked at the entrance by snowdrifts. If we can't get through, we will retreat, drive to Kenosha Pass, and hike Kenosha West.

No tigers. We will stay together and set a pace to accommodate our slowest hiker, who will likely be our leader.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
