Class Objectives-

The Traditional Lead Climbing Class is part of the PPG Advanced Rock Climbing Program. In this class, students will be introduced to the principles and techniques of placing gear on a “traditional” rock climb. This class builds upon many of the concepts and skills taught in the PPG ARCPro Gear and Anchors Class.

By the end of the final Field Session, students will perform “mock” trad leads- backed up by a top-rope belay. Students will be evaluated for their gear placements and their understanding of key principles of how to ensure safety while leading a traditional climb.

Prerequisites-

Successful completion of BMS Rock Climbing, the Sport Leading Class and the PPG ARCPro Gear and Anchors class, or equivalent skills and approval from ARC Program directors. Please contact Collin Powers or Scott Kime for any questions as to your suitability for this class and the ARC Program in general.

Special Gear Requirements-

Students should own or purchase as much of the gear listed below as possible. Where the expense of any of the below is not feasible for the student, contact Collin or Scott to see whether arrangements can be made for loaner use during the Field Session.

Basic climbing kit- harness, helmet, climbing shoes

Autoblocking belay device such as BD Guide or Petzl Reverso

#2 Rappel back-up slings, 5-6 mm nylon cord tied into a 10-14 inch loop for auto-block

Gear for anchor construction-

Cordelette- 16-30 ft. of 7 mm nylon cord (untied length)

#2 120 cm sewn runners (nylon or Dyneema)

#4 quickdraws

#6 60 cm sewn runners (nylon or Dyneema)

Locking carabiners- #4: at least 2 large HMS type
