2019 Alpine Scrambling Course, Basic Skills Session 1 - Rock
Location: Front Porch, Flatirons, NE Ridge

Description of session activities and gear requirements provided through small instructional groups. For Basic Skills Session 1, students need helmet, climbing harness, 2 locking carabiners, a 60 cm sewn sling, a 120 sewn sling, 60 inches of 5 mm nylon accessory cord, adequate clothing for expected weather conditions, including rain gear, hiking boots or approach shoes, 10 essentials. Instructors bring at least one 30 m rope per instructional group, same technical gear as students plus a small climbing rack of rock pro.

The Basic Skills Session 1 is an all day field trip conducted in small groups. It consists of both reviews and new skills development:

* Mountain travel skills
* Hazard identification
* Route finding
* Risk management
* Scrambling techniques on rock
* Managing emergency situations
* Roped climbing practice
* Debrief
