With limited access to RMNP (thanks to the ongoing government shutdown), perhaps Hidden Falls won't have seen too many eager visitors and hopefully will not be as crowded -- nor as kicked out! -- as usual.  Let's go find out!  My understanding is that the road to the Wild Basin Ranger Station is closed, which will add an additional couple of miles to the approach.  So pack your snowshoes as well as your ice tools and climbing gear.

Ice climbing school or equivalent experience required. The plan is to top rope or lead the main ice column, side flows, or mixed climbs. We will arrange group gear (e.g. ropes) and carpooling via email prior to the trip.

In 2019, John and Debbie will be leading technical trips on Fridays.  Each trip will be leader's choice, and may include snow couloirs, ice climbs, fifth-class rock, backcountry skiing, or -- if it's a powder day at Loveland -- downhill skiing.  If the weather is really bad, we will go have fun lead climbing indoors (at Earth Treks) (where you can practice mock leading if you are not yet a qualified lead climber).

Except for ski trips and gym days, participants will generally need HAMS-level experience and a high fitness level.  Preference will be given to HAMS grads who are relatively new to technical climbing and who would like to gain more experience in the backcountry (also, any technical trip leaders who need an LIT will be given first preference!).  Because we need to encourage more women to join technical backcountry trips, there will be occasional gals-only trips, given sufficient interest.

John will not open the registration for these trips until a week or so before they are scheduled, so that an appropriate trip can be planned, depending on current conditions and the long-range weather forecast, and also so that participants are as sure as they can be that they can make the trip.  John reserves the right to change the trip objective at any time (of course in that case, he will notify all participants beforehand).

John is a CMC Senior Instructor for snow, rock, and ice.  Debbie is a CMC senior instructor for snow and rock.  Together, they were Co-Directors of HAMS from 2014-2017, and they now serve on the Technical Climbing School (TCS) Committee.

If you have a particular backcountry objective in mind for which you would like to be accompanied by an experienced technical trip leader, please feel free to contact John or Debbie, who will then try to accommodate your request at some point during the season.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
