Location

Let's go somewhere really different!  A longish drive but big payoff in viewing rare and colorful hoodoos on the prairie.  The Paint Mines Interpretive Center is an El Paso County Park.  Meet in the NE corner of Cabela's parking lot, Lone Tree.

If enough of you live way north, I'll let you know that so you might be able to meet up somewhere closer to home.  This entire day will be EXPLORATORY for the leaders.   Learn more here:

Details

This is a moderate loop hike through an Eastern El Paso County Regional Park:  the spectacular Paint Mines Interpretive Park near Calhan. We walk through many rare hoodoo formations surrounded by prairie grasslands.  This place is listed by Mother Nature Network as one of the world's most colorful natural wonders. https://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/eco-tourism/blogs/12-worlds-most-colorful-natural-wonders.

They say the rock formations tell the story of past climate change and are used by scientists around the world as an analog for present day global warming. Evidence for human habitation in the area dates back 10,000 years. Native Americans really did use the Mines for paint and dyes.  More recently, homesteaders used the clays for making bricks.
