Details

This will be a casual, out and back snowshoe hike along the Colorado Trail from the west side of Kenosha Pass – perfect for beginner snowshoers or those putting on the snowshoes for the first time this season.  We will hike out along the Colorado Trail about 4.25 miles to Deadman Gulch, have a break for lunch, and then return to our cars. For those interested – a post-hike stop in Fairplay will be an option.

This is a 8.5 mile out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of 400 and loss of 500 for 900 total (Start at 10,000ft – gain 400 to the highpoint at 10,400ft – and drop as low as 9,850 feet). Climbs are gradual. We will be below treeline – but enjoy some openings along the trail. We will avoid any avalanche terrain – none on planned route. CMC classifies this as a MODERATE Snowshoe Trip - up to 8 miles round trip and 1200 ft. elevation gain.

No speedsters please - we will stay together and set a pace to accommodate our slowest hiker, and enjoy the scenery and trip as a group. Photo ops and stops are probable. This trail has beautiful views of South Park, the Mosquito Range, the Tarryall Mountains, and an overlook of Baker Lake, and passes through several outstanding stands of Aspen.

For those wishing to carpool, we will meet at the Safeway Parking (south end where not cars park) at 3275 W Colorado Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80904 (Google Map https://goo.gl/maps/PrQ5uBj2qjq) at 7:00am for a prompt 7:15am departure.

Notes

This is an EXPLORATORY hike – trip leader has not been on this trail before

Remember your 10 essentials and a lunch, snacks to share, water, trekking poles, layers, and microspikes if you have them

No pets
