NOTE: I, Britt Jones have been asked by Roger Kilcoyne to lead the Crestone Traverse trip since he can't make it.

Here is the info on the traverse 14ers.com:

CRESTONE TRAVERSE PLAN:
I (Britt) have decided we will go from Peak (via Red Gully) to the Needle. The above 14ers.com shows the TH as South Colony creek....however, we will drive to the Cottonwood Creek TH (south of Crestone, CO) on Saturday. We will backpack up to 11,200' to camp. We will start hiking Sunday morning at 4:00am.

Using the approach from the west side will allow us to avoid Broken Hand Pass which is still snow filled. Therefore, we won't need ice axes or crampons. And not having to climb up and over Broken Hand Pass and then drop back down will make it quicker and easier to be at the base of the red gully by sunrise. This will help us get up and off of the summits before thunderstorms (hopefully!)

Details

If we start hiking at 4:30am, I am guessing we should summit Crestone Peak around 8:30am. If we leave for the traverse by 9:00am, we could be on the summit of Crestone Needle by noon. We could then take our time hiking back to camp, and hiking out. We could then stop in Salida for dinner on the way home.

You can read these TRs for beta:

Headlamps and helmets required. Of course, have your 10 Essentials with you.

NOTE: If you think you may be a bit uncomfortable on that last exposed Class 4 headwall, bring a harness and a locking carabiner. I will bring a 30 meter rope and anyone who wants a belay can have one.

Notes

I am guessing we may not get to Salida until 8:00pm. If we stop for dinner, then we may not get back to Colorado Springs until 11:00pm.

6 of us hiked up to 11,300' and camped Saturday night. It rained from midnight to 3:00am. Didn't think the traverse would happen. We left camp at 4:08am and rain began again at 4:45am. Argh! Kristen was up in the meadow camping under the red gulley. So we went anyway to meet her. Got to meadow at 5:30am. All 7 of us climbed the Peak. Back at the traverse, we had snippets of sun pop thru so we went for the travers. Shrouded in fog, clouds, and wind, the traverse was cold but it went! All 7 of us made the traverse and the Crestone Needle! It remained dry until we were back on Cottonwood Creek. The it started raining...the rest of the day. Tearing down and packing camp in the rains was YUK!
