Details

We should be able to find some good snow in the Pumphouse Basin area of Berthoud Pass for some easy AT or Tele ski turns.  This is an excellent Backcountry introduction tour.   There is currently avalanche concern on easterly-facing aspects on wind-loaded slopes near and above treeline (https://avalanche.state.co.us/forecasts/backcountry-avalanche/front-range/), so we will stick to relatively mellow terrain, which this area features.

This is an appropriate trip for those who are starting out in backcountry skiing or for more experienced skiers who want to enjoy a day in the backcountry snow on mellow slopes.  Bonus:  getting in a bit of exercise skinning up the ridge.

The forecast is calling for a frigid day on Berthoud Pass, with highs in the single digits and gusty winds (!), so bring hand/toe warmers, face protection, goggles and sunglasses.  In addition to the usual 10 essentials appropriate for Colorado winter day travel, you must bring a beacon, probe, and shovel (properly stored on the inside of your day pack).   Helmet recommended.

DON"T FORGET YOUR SKINS!

We will be targeting the Pumphouse Basin area due north of the parking pullout (Route 23 in Jordan Lipp's guidebook entitled Backcountry Skiing Berthoud Pass)

Note:  this area in the map below is referred to as "No Name Bench", Route 20, in Lipp's guidebook entitled Backcountry Skiing Berthoud Pass:   Map: http://caltopo.com/m/PAF1 .
