Details

This is one of the snow practice sessions for instructors and assistants of the Alpine Scrambling Course (Fort Collins).

The location of the climb is the E face of S Diamond Pk, accessible from Cameron Pass. In case of questionable weather and snowpack, the alternate location is N Diamond Pk. You will definitely need snowshoes plus trekking poles or backcountry skis for this approach.

Bring helmet, ice ax, climbing harness, a couple of locking carabiners, a sling or two, mountaineering boots, belay/rappel device, gaiters, cold weather clothing, wind and sun protection.

Two practice options are offered:
(1) With crampons: Climb to the top of the E face descend. Bring crampons for this option.
(2) Without crampons: Climb part-way up the couloir and descend.

Bring additional climbing gear if you have it: rope, a snow picket, a few slings and carabiners. Bring snowshoes, trekking poles or backcountry ski gear for the approach.

Instructors will be able to preview this route as a possible practice area for the ASC Basic Skills Session and Elective Scrambles. We may reschedule the date and location if conditions are unfavorable or pick an alternate location.

Notes

Instructors and assistant instructors of the Alpine Scrambling Course are given preference. ASC instructors and assistants should sign up by May 5. Others will be placed on a waiting list for any available spots available after that date.
