This is Day 3 of a five-day camping trip to hike five Wilderness Areas in Colorado, and the second night of a three-night stay at Wupperman Campground, south of Lake City, Co.

Day 3 begins at Wupperman Campground. Today's goal is to hike Powderhorn Park Trail into Powderhorn Wilderness Area, then return to Wupperman for another day and two more nights camping above Lake San Cristobal.

Powderhorn Park Trailhead is just off CR 788, about ten miles from From Co 149. The trail leads to Powderhorn Park, an open meadow about five miles and 1600' from the trailhead. Most of the trail lies in BLM territory and there isn't much info online.

Powederhorn Wilderness is small - only about 60,000 acres with 45 miles of trails.  Fielder's "Complete Guide to Colorado's Wilderness Areas" states it is one of the largest unbroken expanses of alpine tundrea in the contiguous 48 states.  Described as having a sense of vastness with views of San Juan,Elk and Sawatch mountain ranges.
