John's backcountry theme for 2019 is to hike all 37 Wilderness Areas in Colorado.

This is Day 4 of a five-day trip to hike five Wilderness Areas. Today's goal is to hike Rough Creek Trail in La Garita Wilderness Area. After the hike we will return to Wupperman Campground to overnight.

One of Colorado's lesser known Wilderness Areas, La Garita is actually one of the state's five original WAs designated by Congress in 1964. It has twice been enlarged so today it covers 35 miles of the Continental Divide in the northern San Juan Mountains. In Spanish, La Garita means "The Lookout."

Rough Creek Trail (463) climbs steadily to cross Rough Creek simultaneously with the intersection of crossing trail #459. We will trek as far as the group wants to, then return to the cars the same way.

This is an exploratory hike.
