Details

This is the final exploratory hike and Day 5 of a five-day trip to hike five wilderness areas in Colorado.

The trip starts as we break camp in Wupperman Campground, drive to Independence TH to hike Independence Trail in Uncompahgre Wilderness Area, then continue home.

Uncompahgre WA has one of the most distinctive skylines in Colorado, with broken summits, lofty ridges and precipice peaks.Ouray, on the west side of Uncompahgre calls itself America's Switzerland.

Independence Trail (234/244) is a short loop on the east side of Uncompahgre, off hwy 149, just north of Lake City. Going clockwise, the trail runs west up Independence Gulch for about three miles, then forks north about a mile, to turn east for about three miles back to the trailhead. It's situated prefectly for a team heading home to stop and stretch our legs before beginning the long ride to Denver.

Notes

This is an exploratory trip.
