Details

Waterton Canyon is the northern point and entrance to the Colorado Trail.  This area is managed by Denver Water.  The start of this trail is at 5,515 feet elevation. It follows the S. Platte River.  The trail was previuosly a railroad bed and is wide and hard packed and has only a 100 foot elevation gain in the first 4 miles.

This will be an out and back hike for a total of about 7 miles. ( However the full trail length round trip is 12.4 miles.)

This canyon is noted for a wide variety of wildlife, beautiful rock canyon walls and the S.Platte River.  Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep are commonly seen, both on the trail and up the canyon walls, especially in the first couple miles from the trailhead. Additionally much of Denver's water supply and its history are here.  Some of the original water treatment buildings are still present at the trailhead.  Along the trail can be seen overhead water conduits, reservoirs, dams, and some informative signage.

While scouting, we enjoyed watching several groups of these Bighorn Sheep and a soaring Bald Eagle.

Notes

Lunch will be at the Mountian Lion Rest Area.  At this location there are 2 sheltered picnic tables. The trail itself has no shade. Vault toilets are present at several locations along the trail, including at the start and at this rest area.

Each person should bring water, snacks / lunch, and their 10 essentials, including personal medications, first aid items, and sun protections.  However, light backpacks are appropriate for this easy trail and location.

Please notify leader prior to the hike if you have any personal medical issues which could impact you or the group hike.

An email update will be sent on Tuesday March 19th, especially regarding trail and weather conditions.
