The off trail portion of this trip is suggested by Hike #23 in "Colorado Hikes in Jefferson County" (Muller, CMC Press) and a  rugged trail known to the leader has been added for more adventure.  From the "lower" TH just west of Deckers we hike the Gill Trail into Cheesman Canyon for three miles on a good up and down trail used much by fisherman to access the beautiful South Platte River below Cheesman Dam.  The fourth mile of trail has been poorly maintained for years and we pick our way across a steep side slope alternating between pieces of old trail and no trail.  Just short of the dam we hike out of the canyon on good trail once again and contour 2 miles to where the trail descends to the reservoir access road and the "upper" TH.  Here we depart the trail and climb to the ridge above (as in hike #23) and proceed to follow it up and down northward to a false summit, then east to the real summit.  According to the book there is scrambling on the ridge and the true summit, a large exposed boulder, is attained only by rock climbers so we shall content ourselves finishing a few feet below the summit.  To return to our starting point we hike down the NE ridge (unlike the book which returned by the ascent route) to a sub summit, then east and finally north on gentler slopes to pick up the Gill trail 1/2 mile from our TH.  The elevation difference between lower TH and summit is 1500' but there is so much up and down on both trail and ridge that I have added another 1000' to the estimated elevation gain and it may be more than that.  Although we travel 5 miles on good trail I would not suggest signing up for this trip unless you like off trail (which will be exploratory to the trip leader).

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
