I know that this transcendence will be fleeting, but while it lasts, I spring along the path as if set free.

—Peter Matthiessen,

The Snow Leopard

As the quote above suggests, this will be a relaxed trip to enjoy the great Colorado scenery of the Chicago Basin.

General plan for the trip:

Tuesday Sept. 3                        Drive to Durango from Denver

Wednesday Sept 4                   8:45 train departure from Durango to Needleton Stop, Backpack in 6.5 mile and 2800 ft to Chicago Basin

Thursday Sept 5                      Alpine start, climb Sunlight then Windom Peaks, Class 4 on Sunlight right at summit, mostly class 3

Friday  Sept 6                            Alpine start, climb Eolus and North Eolus, class 3, return to camp

Saturday Sept 7                       Break camp and backpack to Needleton stop, drink beer stashed in Animas River, catch 3:30 train, party in Durango

Sunday Sept 8                          Head back to Denver

As you can see, this trip will be more than just a peak bagging experience.  LNT principles will be strictly followed in the basin.  I will provide all of the "blue bags" to haul out our personal waste.  Helmets will be required for all of the class 3 and 4.

Once you are confirmed for the trip, I will give you the info to purchase your train tickets. I have an Air Band B reserved for Tuesday and Saturday night in Durango near the train station.

Bear canisters will probably not be needed, but I will bring my 30 meter alpine rope to hang food sacks if we think we need to.
