Location

We will begin the trip from the Glacier Gorge trailhead parking lot. I like to take the summer trail via Alberta Falls to Mill Creek Junction. We will then take the trail to Mills Lake and if possible take the winter trail to the lake. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will have  magnificent views of Keyboard of the Winds, 13,497 foot Pagoda Mountain, 13,579 foot Chiefs Head Peak and 12,688 foot Thatchtop Mountain. FYI, Mills Lake was named after Enos Mills the man commonly referred to as the 'father of Rocky Mountain National Park'. Mills spent numerous years lecturing across the nation lobbying Congress and writing thousands of letters and articles that eventually led to the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915. Though I may be liberal in politics, I am conservative in safety and may avoid crossing over the ice of Mills and Jewel Lakes this late in the season and go around both lakes to the trail to Black Lake. We will then continue on the Black Lake trail climb ing past frozen Ribbon Falls to Black Lake. This spectacular alpine lake fills a deep cirque basin carved out of the base of McHenry's Peak and Chiefs Head Peak. From the north shore the Arrowhead will be the dominating feature. Almost directly in front of us will be 13,327 foot McHenry's Peak, and above the headwall, looking due south is The Spearhead and 13,579 Chiefs Head Peak. We return to Jewel and Mills Lake to Mill Creek Junction. Then take the winter trail back to the trailhead.
