Craig Meadow Backpacking Trip

Note: Trip leader will make a weather (too much snow) and participant numbers (minimum of 4 required) decision at 6:00pm Friday night May 3rd and email participants from the registration roster with an update on trip status (Go or Cancel).

60 mile drive one way. Trail mileage 5 miles one way, from elevation 8,261’ we will climb to 9,308’ and gain 1,289’ before losing 843’ to camp at 8,706’

CMC Trip Rating is Class B: Up to 12 miles round trip and 2500ft. elevation gain. (Moderate to strenuous physical activity. Some prior experience is beneficial.)

New to backpacking, want to try out your cold weather gear, or just looking for a fun trip in the colder weather of the spring?  This trip is for you. We will be backpacking to/from the Craig Meadow in the Lost Creek Wilderness of the Pike National Forest.  Located just south of Bailey, CO.

This trip is primarily for new backpackers of the PPG , but if you are interested in signing up – please do so after reading all the information here. Besides backpacking, we will be reviewing and practicing Leave No Trace Principles, camp set up, bear bag handing, water treatment, backcountry cooking and hygiene, as well as discussing gear and sharing trip and gear ideas. Bring your favorite backpacking meal or snack to share!

We will leave Saturday (May 4th) at 7:00am from the west end of the Safeway Parking Lot (3275 W Colorado Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80904) and return by 2pm Sunday (May 5th) afternoon in time to get cleaned up and head to the PPG 100th Anniversary Celebration

From our meetup site at the Safeway parking lot, we will take CO 24 to Woodland Park, CO 67 to Deckers, and then CO 126 and FS Road 550 and 543 the Rolling Rock Creek Trailhead Google Map: (Driving plan:

From the trailhead we will hike west on Colorado Trail #1776, gradually gaining elevation from the trailhead to the trip’s highpoint. After 3 miles, we will take the right fork to Payne Creek Trail # 637 which after about a mile, will take us to Craig Meadows and Craig Creek. We will camp there overnight, and return Sunday morning the same way we hiked in.

This is a backpacking trip – so you must carry everything you need for shelter, food, water, and the elements. This time of the year it is cold at night and may be much warmer during the day. To reduce weight – you are encouraged to buddy up on tents, stoves, water treatment, etc. with others as you feel comfortable.
