Location

Cheesman Canyon on the South Platte River.   We’ll hike into the canyon on the Gill trail from the trailhead parking area off of CO Route 126  (aka Deckers Road).   The plan will be to hike into the canyon past Iron Spring, to the head of Cow’s crossing and begin fishing from there.   Depending on the water flows and the desires of the group we can move up stream or downstream.

Cheesman canyon is considered by some to be a technical fishery, most anglers use tiny flies (nymphs sized 20-26) but I’ve had many successful days in the canyon fishing dry flies and streamers.  Bring whatever flies you like to fish and have confidence in, but a selection of nymphs, dry flies and streamers is suggested.

We’ll plan to start hiking at 0800 hrs.  The hike in is a few miles but not particularly difficult.  The Gill trail was dramatically improved about 8 years ago and the first 2+ miles are well established and graded.  The trail gets much more difficult after 2 miles or so, we won’t be going there as there’s plenty of water to fish in the first 2 miles of the trail. The hike out of the canyon is mostly uphill.

Fly rods of 4-6 weight are appropriate.  Leaders and tippet 2-6X

I recommend that you bring traction devices for whatever boots you plan to hike in, into the canyon.   Compacted snow and ice on the trail is likely to be present on t

Plan for a full day of fishing so bring everything you’ll need for the full day including a valid 2019 CO fishing license, rain gear, the ten essentials. For some a hiking or trekking pole may be useful on the way in and out.  A water filter will allow you to carry less water into the canyon.

Notes

please remember to update your CO fishing license
