Details

Join Mike Endres for a day of spring skiing on Pike's Peak to celebrate our 100th Anniversary.

We'll meet at the Safeway in Old Colorado City at 8am and leave promptly for the toll road gate by 8:15.

The road opens at 9am but we want to be there early in order to ski as much as possible before conditions are too warm.

We'll ski the broad bowl above the Glenn Cove parking area, choosing lines based on group abilities and snow conditions. Participants should be comfortable on Blacks at a minimum. If time & conditions allow, we'll take a look at the RR Coulior on the North Face and/or the East Face near the Summit House and see if they're doable. While this is very accessible backcountry, slackcountry if you will, there are still objective hazards to assess that will ultimately determine what we end up skiing. Avalanche risk is generally low for most of the routes this time of the season although wet slides are definately possible as the snow warms up. Helmet, avy gear and a means to self-arrest are required. Boarders welcome as are well-behaved dogs. Backcountry ski gear is not necessary as there's very little hikng for the most part. We'll use car shuttles/hitch-hike to access the Devil's Playground parking area from which we can ski back down to the road. If we do anything off the summit, an ice axe & crampons can be useful to hike back out so throw 'em in your car.

Notes

There is a $10/person fee to use the toll road.

The road can be closed at different points based on wind & ice conditions. We won't know for sure what's accessible until the morning of the outing.
