Details

From Wooly Mammoth, we will take I-70 West to the Herman Gulch trailhead (Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/vsgUS3dkkhp ).  On the way we will stop at the Georgetown Visitor Center.

Starting at Herman Gulch Trailhead we will hike up the trail into Watrous Gulch, then turning east until we reach the north slope of Mt Parnassus, while we will ascend to the summit of Mt. Parnassus (13,574’)  From there, we will then traverse the ridgeline to Bard Peak (13,641’).  From the summit of Bard Peak, we will return to Mt. Parnassus and descend back into Watrous Gulch.  This route is 8.1 miles long with 4600 ft. elevation gain

An alternative route is to descent Bard Peak's southeast ridge until we reach the Bard Creek Trail.  We will then take the Bard Creek Trail back to Watrous Gulch and to the trailhead.  This loop route is longer, about 11 miles with elevation gain of 4500 - 5000'.  I plan to scout this route out prior to the trip, once more of the snow has melted, before deciding on which route to take.  That will also allow me to determine the extent of steep and/or talus, to determine if a helmet is therefore required for this trip.

NOTE: This trip is considered a “Long Difficult C” class hike, since its elevation gain (5000 ft.) is greater than that of a difficult C hike, but that it doesn’t require any technical skills.

Notes

This is a Bobcat trip. The Bobcats mission is to ensure a variety of challenging CMC trips, especially “B Difficult” and “C” hikes and Difficult Snowshoes, for our mostly age-50+ constituents.  Although we have members, our trips are non-exclusive.  We welcome all CMC members to sign up for any Bobcats trip regardless of age or Bobcats membership. To join our mailing list, write or call CMC Membership Services at: office@cmc.org or (303) 279-3080.

The mileage allowance per car is 80 miles x .30 = $24.
