Erin Bohler -

The Tour de Abyss is decribed in Gerry Roach's guide "Colorado's Fourteeners From Hikes to Climbs. It includes the Mount Bierstadt East Ridge "Classic" and the Sawtooth "Classic" that climbs from Bierstadt to Mount Evans. As suggested in write ups in trip reports posted on the group will start the hike at the parking lot on the summit of Mount Evans.

From the lot we will decend down the road to a switchback at 13,300 ft. From the road we will hike south to the low point of the Evans-Epaulet saddle, then descend west down a scree gully to Scott Gomer Creek. The group will then hike west across the valley near a small unnamed lake then climb west up to reach Bierstadt's east ridge. On the ridge the group will Class 3 scramble to a grassy ledge and continue to scramble up the east side of Point 13,641. After "summiting" the group will Class 3 scramble down the west side of 13,641 and continue on the east ridge to the summit of Bierstadt. NOTE the class 3 scrambles on Point 13,641 do involve some exposure.

From Bierstadt we will decend to a saddle between Bierstadt and the Sawtooth. The group will Class 3 scramble along the Sawtooth starting on the east side and Class 3 scramble to the west side above a grass and rock studded gully. Once past the Sawtooth will hike across open slopes to the west ridge of Mount Evans. We will asend the ridge to return to the hordes on the summit.
