Meet at Tennessee Pass, off Hwy 24, at the 10th Mtn. Memorial at the entrance to Ski Cooper, 50 minutes/43 miles north of Buena Vista.

Tour the Pando Valley where the 10th Mtn camp once housed 10,000 personnel, 4000 mules and 250 sled dogs.

This will be a leisurely, flat snowshoe or cross country ski tour (on ungroomed terrain)  of the valley with frequent stops to hear about the history of Camp Hale and the 10th Mtn Division; its impact during WWII and later as it generated many founding fathers of the U.S. Ski Industry and served as a top secret CIA training base.

Round trip approx. 5 miles max, depending on snow conditions.

10 am: Meet at Tennessee Pass at the 10th Mtn. Memorial at the entrance to Ski Cooper, 50 minutes/43 miles north of Buena Vista. Visit the memorial and get a quick overview and plan for the day

10:30: Travel to the main entrance by the Field House ruins (2 miles north of Tennessee Pass) Park and gear up          

11:00 – 2 pm     

Stops along the way:

  • Eagle River – Straightest river in the army

  • Field House ruins and fun facts

  • Rock climbing wall – story of Mt. Belvedere and Riva Ridge

  • Lunch and discuss the Camp Hale clean-up project

  • Rifle Range and east fork Eagle River (1 mile point)

  • Optional snowshoe to where the Colorado Trail comes into the valley; Kokomo Trailhead (2 mile point)

  • Return
