Climb Uncompahgre Peak, the 6th highest summit in Colorado and far from Front Range crowds (but I doubt we will be alone).  This huge mountain (5th biggest on Gerry Roache's 14er peak power list) is a member of the "Lake City Group" of San Juan Fourteeners.  There is a mostly good trail all the way to the top.  On the return we take the El Paso Creek Trail to make a loop hike adding an extra mile, a few hundred feet gain, and some adventure, to the standard route.  Do I have to add this is San Juan beauty as good as any - a sea of near and far high summits including several 14ers.

Uncompahgre Peak is perhaps best know to 14er baggers because the Nellie Creek TH is one of the most difficult 14er trail heads to access.  Fortunately we have two 4WD crew cab pickups for this trip so we can take 8 people.  We leave Friday about noon and drive to Nellie Creek TH near Lake City.  Here we set up a car camp so we can start early Saturday to climb the peak.  We head back to Denver early Sunday morning getting back early afternoon.  Everyone brings their own food for 2 breakfast, 1 lunch, and 2 dinner, and of course tent and other camp gear.  This is a car camp so no need to be frugal with the equipment.  The leader summitted Uncompahgre Pk about 30 years ago so I guess you could say this trip is exploratory because he can't remember much about that hike.

Drivers are hard to come by (especially with 4WD trucks) so we at least reimburse them some expense.  The formula (standard Denver Group policy) for this trip is 520 miles X 30 cents/mile divided by 4 people per truck = $40 paid to driver by each passenger.  If you sign up watch for an E-mail about a week prior with more information.  And of course feel free to contact the leader anytime with questions to ask or information to tell.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
