Tired of slogging through the white stuff?  This trip ought to be a good snow free warmup for the season.

Fisher’s Peak looms over Trinidad in southern Colorado.   Its all downhill from the summit:  In the lower 48, there is no higher point east of this peak.

Day 1.  Drive down, backpack two or three miles on trail into James M John & Lake Dorothey State Wildlife Areas.  Set up camp.

Day 2. Off trail, a ten or eleven mile day.  We’ll cross Fisher’s Mesa and attempt Fisher’s Peak from the southeast.  This may entail exposure and scrambling.   Expect views north and west of the Sangre De Cristo Range and the Spanish Peaks.   If the day is clear we ought to be able to see into four or even five states to the south and east.

Day 3.  Out and home.

Along the way we will enjoy southern Colorado’s canyon and mesa country. (Not everything east of I25 is pancake flat!). The mesa is at 9000’ and is a wildlife area closed to wheeled vehicles.  There are elk, bear, deer, lions and turkeys.  This is a seldom visited area with a rich history.

Individual food.    This is exploratory.
