HIKE IS CHANGED DUE TO AVALANCHE DEBRE ON GENEVA BASIN ROAD. We searched for a replacement that is out of town, relatively dry, possibly we can find some flowers. We will hike up 5 mi or less. If people are tired after 4 mi, or we encounter snow we will turn back. Trail is bit steeper, approx 2300 gain. Please all come, leaders are encouraging all to give this trail a try.

Trailhead is on hwy 285, just past town of Shawnee. If we finish by 3pm we will stop at old General store/museum to look around historic items, etc. We found it an interesting place. Possibly the long term resident will be and tell some historical stories. Will plan stop about 30 min for this stop.

Leaders are not bringing snowshoes or microspikes.

Fens are peat bogs fed by groundwater. These fens are so iron rich they have formed large expanses of barren limonite, a hydrous iron oxide mineral. A rare geological and biological phenomenon, the area is now protected as a Clear Creek County Open Space and Colorado Natural Area. Be prepared to cross wetlands and numerous streams as we explore this fascinating area.

See with good pics at On this trip we hike to the fen for an exploration of its features.  Bring your camera!

Area is very wet - you must be agile. It is also fragile, please respect and protect this rare feature.
