Location

There is a culoir splitting to two branches on the middle of the North face of Flattop mountain.  Not sure of the name, but it is NOT he Ptarmigan culoirs (it is East from those) and not Dragontail or Dead Elk (those are on the south face).  We'll try either branch of the culoir depending on snow conditons. The top of the culoir may need some rock scrambling as well - this could be belayed if needed.

Details

This is a real culoir climb on snow, so some snow climbing is expected (like Dragontail or Dead Dog).  It is intended as the continuation of any basic snow climbing practice that included the basic self-arrest, snow climbing stepping techniques and some exposure on snow.

We will NOT practice ice climbing and glaciated alpine techniques so you don't need related gear like ice tool or crevasse rescue setup and such

The choice of exact line of climbing - and so the degree of snow - will depend on snow conditions and participants ablities.  If needed, we could use rope on short stretches on snow or scrambling at the top, so you need to be able to tie in on a rope.

Required gear: snow shoes, ice axe (ice tool is not appropriate), stiff soled mountaineering boots, 12 point crampon (trail crampon or micro spikes are not sufficient), seat harness with locking carabiner, helmet, heavy mittens, goggles and full winter clothing.  Ten essentials without fire making stuff. Crampons should be fitted on your boots you bring.  (Skis are not allowed.)

Optional gear: hiking pole(s), mountaineering rope (8mm thick, 30m long), few extra carabiner, camera, ice tool, gaitors.

If you have any question, write at doktorbuboka@yahoo.com.
