Lecture 1 October 16, 6:00-9:00PM

Lecture 2 October 17, 6:00-9:00PM

Students need to attend one (only) of the following field days:

Field Day October 19, all day starting at 7:00AM

Field Day October 20, all day starting at 7:00AM

This is a Basic Map and Compass course meant to be preparation for Navigation Level 2. Navigation Level 2 is required for completion of the Basic Mountaineering certificate.

Nav Level 1 is not a required prerequisite for Nav Level 2. If you have absolutely mastered the Map & Compass you learned in Backpacking School or Wilderness Trekking School, you will probably be ok going straight to Nav Level 2. If however, you are a little fuzzy or rusty on your Map & Compass skills, you will have trouble in Nav Level 2.

This course covers

  • Maps, physical and digital; how to source them

  • Map features and how to read them (in detail)

  • Compasses, different types and how to use them; declination adjustment

  • Terrain recognition

  • GPS coordinates (latitude/longitude); UTM coordinates

  • Orientation: Area position, line position, point position

  • Taking a bearing in the field

  • Following a bearing in the field

  • Plotting a bearing on a map

  • Following a bearing on a map

A compass is required for this class. We strongly, strongly urge you to buy a compass with declination adjustment if you have not yet bought one. A compass with sighting mirror is recommended if you wish to shoot more precise bearings, but it is certainly not required.

Note that most stores do not stock large quantities of quality compasses. So do not wait until a couple days before class to buy your compass. You might have to shop around or go online.

Preapration and what to bring:

  • Bring your compass with you to the first lecture.

  • Be prepared to do some homework in advance of the first lecture. (Pre-course info will be sent out)

  • For the field day, be prepared for winter conditions.

Attendance/Completion Policy
Students must attend all lectures and field days to receive credit for completing the course. Students will not be allowed to continue beyond a missed lecture/field day. Students must also demonstrate mastery of the both the prerequisites and the skills taught in the immediate class. If such mastery cannot be demonstrated, the student will be asked to repeat the course. If a student cannot demonstrate mastery of the prerequisites the student will not be allowed to continue in the class.

Note that classes sometimes show "Sessions"; Basic Climbing Session A, for example. Sessions are simply alternate dates of the same class. In other words, you may choose Session A or Session B, depending on which dates work best for you. You do not have to complete both Session A and Session B.

Cancellation Policy:
Classes must have minimum four students signed up and requisite number of instructors. If either number is too low class may be cancelled.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
