Details

Fens are peat bogs fed by groundwater. These fens are so iron rich they have formed large expanses of barren limonite, a hydrous iron oxide mineral. A rare geological and biological phenomenon, the area is now protected as a Clear Creek County Open Space and Colorado Natural Area. Be prepared to cross wetlands and numerous streams as we explore this fascinating area.

See http://www.co.clear-creek.co.us/index.aspx?NID=257 with good pics at http://www.damouth.org/PhotoAlbum/GenevaMines On this trip we hike to the fen for an exploration of its features.  Bring your camera!

Notes

Area is very wet - you must be agile. It is also fragile, please respect and protect this rare feature.
