Details

This peak is the lowest climb described in Gerry Roach’s “Rocky Mountain National Park Classic Hikes and Climbs”. However, as Dan Gayton would always say about this peak, “it has a summit you won’t want to leave and an approach you’ll never forget”.

From the Bear Lake trailhead in RMNP, we’ll hike to Lake Helene. From there we will descend down past Grace Falls and then bushwhack and hike off-trail up to the southwest ridge. The ridge crest is blocky and extremely exposed. We will work northeast along the ridge, scrambling through lots of Class 3 and probably a bit of Class 4 terrain, out to the spectacular summit. Return by reversing the route. Net elevation gain is about 2400 feet.

Note: This is a field trip of the Alpine Scrambling Course (Fort Collins). ASC students will be given priority for this trip.  If you are not an ASC student you will be placed on the Wait List

Notes

Register with Leader:  When you register for this trip you may be placed on a wait list. Alpine Scrambling Course students have priority on this field trip. Hence, non-ASC members are moved to a wait list and ASC students to the participant list after they register. ASC students should register at least 6 days prior to the trip date. This will allow trip leaders sufficient time to communicate with students regarding trip plans. it would also allow time for trip leaders to notify non-ASC members if there is space on the trip.

Participants are required to bring climbing helmet, climbing harness, and additional recommended ASC gear such as a locking carabiner and prussik, in addition to the usual gear and provisions for a CMC backcountry excursion.
