The trail runs 4.1 miles through the Mt Evans Wilderness area to a scenic tarn in a wide glacial valley. The tarn occupies a wide, marshy basin ringed by ancient Bristlecone pine in a park-like setting at the base of Grey Wolf mountain. Fun Fact: The oldest know Bristlecone Pine in the Rocky Mountains is estimated to be over 2400 years old!
The trail begins on a steady, sometimes steep, climb through tall, arching aspen then switches to a healthy spruce-fir forest before opening up to the meadow/tarn. Most of the elevation gain is in the first 2 miles. There are three water crossings - two on logs and the other (not very wide) on rocks. We saw a wide variety of wild flowers on the scout. I hope the Columbine are still blooming on Wednesday!
