Mount Columbia is in the Sawatch Range.  The hike will start at the North Cottonwood Creek Trailhead, twelve miles west of the town of Buena Vista.

The start time of 4:30 AM is when people who want to drive from the Wooly Mammoth Park-n-Ride need to leave in order to meet those of us who are staying at or near Buena Vista by 7 AM, which is the moment we will all leave for the trailhead.

There will be a first hike, the day before this one, to nearby Mount Yale, 14,200 feet.  This first hike is defined as a separate trip.  You may register for one or the other or both.

You may elect to drive from the Denver area the day either trip, and return the day of either trip, or stay in or near Buena Vista.  Because of the difficulty of the hike, it is highly recommended that you stay in or near Buena Vista either the night before or the night after the hike, or both.

There are numerous motels and camping areas in the area.

This is the standard route to the top of Columbia.  The North Cottonwood Creek trailhead is at about 9880 feet. We will take various trails just below treeline at 11,400 feet, then go off trail to climb the steep West Slopes to reach Columbia's south ridge at 13,660 feet.  The last 0.6 miles on the ridge to the summit is fairly easy.
