Location

We will meet at The Fort restaurant near Morrison at 5:30am for a no later than 5:45am departure.

To get to The Fort parking area drive south on US 285, then exit right onto CO 8 (Morrison exit). We will park a few hundred feet past the Fort restaurant entrance. You should see my bright yellow Nissan Xterra off to the right side of the road.

It is desirable at this point to arrange car pools which will allow some hikers to stop at South Park Brewing near Fairplay for food and refreshments after the hike, and others to more quickly return to Denver.

Details

We will initially hike up an abandoned jeep road, which turns into a trail, until treeline (11,700’), then head south and do off-trail climbing up the NE ridge of East Buffalo Peak.

From the summit of East Buffalo Peak we will head NW to gain the summit of West Buffalo Peak. We will begin out descent of West Buffalo Peak by scrambling down the NW ridge to about 13,000’ then alternately weave north, east, and northeast until we finally connect with the ascent trail.

This is a hard hike; it is mostly off trail with boulders, loose talus, dead trees, and stream crossings… all impeding our journey. The group will travel at a moderate but deliberate pace, which will require about nine hours of hiking to complete the circular trip. Remember, a circular trip provides for few opportunities, if any, for an individual to stop short and turn back. Obviously this is less a social hike and more of a goal-oriented hike. Please assess yourself accordingly.

Notes

Please bring your 10 essentials, warm clothing if it’s cool and cool clothing if it’s warm, and rain gear.

Please email the trip leader, prior to the trip, of any medical conditions that could affect you on the trip.

This is a Bobcats trip. The Bobcats' mission is to ensure a variety of challenging CMC trips, especially “B Difficult” and “C” hikes and Difficult Snowshoes, for our mostly age-50+ constituents. We may sponsor other activities of interest to our members, everything from bike rides to camping. Although we have members, we don’t have dues or elections, and our trips are non-exclusive. We welcome all CMC members to sign up for any Bobcats trip regardless of age or Bobcats membership.
