This is a LIT hike for new leader Brian Tollensdorf. This hike is exploratory for the leader.

French Mountain 13,940 ft via South Halfmoon Creek and south slopes

10.5 miles, 3,600 feet of elevation gain, 8 hours estimated duration, moderate pace. This is a long and strenuous hike. Only for CMC members who have been active this summer and confident they can complete at least 12 miles should register for this hike.

From cabin ruins at 12,500' leave the road and hike north toward the steep slope between Frasco Benchmark and French Mountain. Ascend the grassy slope to reach the 13,600-foot saddle between these two peaks and turn right to see French  Follow the short, Class 2 ridge to reach the summit of French

Depending on group ability and time we may go for Frasco and Casco as well and complete the loop. Otherwise, we'll return to the TH after French.

Frasco's summit is 0.4 mile away and the ridge is a bit longer and more difficult than the ridge to French.

The approach to these mountains includes two stream crossings so a suitable water shoe is required to avoid soaking our boots. We will put on a TEVA-like sandal for these crossings.

Required Equipment: Ten Essentials and some kind of sandal or trail shoe for the stream crossing

Will consider making an after-hike stop in Leadville, depending on the group's desires and our time back to Denver.

Carpool: 200 miles round trip

*The people on this trip are an informal, non-exclusive, and active band of mostly age 50 and over hikers or snowshoers who call themselves the Bobcats. We prefer weekday "B Difficult" and "C HIkes and Difficult Snowshoes, trips with 12 or fewer participants. We are affiliated with the Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang, a section of the CMC, and try to ensure that a trip is available on as many weekdays as possible.  Any CMC member, regardless of age or RMOTHG or Bobcat membership, is encouraged to sign up.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
