The Jackal Hut is the eastern most hut owned by 10th Mountain Divison Hut Association. It is located in central Colorado, on the western slope of the Continental Divide about 15 miles north of the city of Leadville at 11,660'. It is the closest hut to the Camp Hale site, where the 10th Mountain Division soldiers did most of their training during the Second World War

I have not done this hike to date so this is a "recon" summer hike to familiarize myself with the route to the Jackal Hut for a future winter trip.  I am inviting others to join me on this exploratory hike.  We will start at Elevation 9250' and hike up via the 4WD FS Roads 714 and FS 755 (the winter trail).  The trip is approximately 4 miles one way with an elevation gain of ~2,500'  We will need to keep our eye out for vehicles as we proceed up to the Hut.

Once at the Hut, we will enjoy some lunch and the views of several 14,000 peaks.  Afterwards, we can decend the same direction or we can descend down the Colorado Trail 2108.  We can make this decision as a group and depening on how everyone feels.

Recommended items for this hiking trip (Additional gear information on the Ten (10) Essentials can be found at

  • Hiking boots

  • hiking poles recommended

  • Daypack

  • Headlamp and extra batteries

  • Pocket knife or multi-tool

  • Sunglasses and hat

Trip went well.  Beautiful weather, good leaves.  All went well.  From parking to hut, the trip was 3.2 miles on Road 755, 7:15 to 10:30 AM

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
