Details

p>This is a beautiful one-way hike from Bear Lake to the Fern Lake Bus Stop. We will meet at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center at 6 a.m. From the visitor center we will form a car pool and drive to the Fern Lake Bus Stop. I anticipate that we will have two cars. From the Fern Lake Bus Stop we will catch the 7 a.m. bus to the Sprague Lake Bus Stop. At the Sprague Lake Bus Stop we will transfer to another bus that will take us to Bear Lake. From Bear Lake will hike back to our parked cars at the Fern Lake Bus Stop.

We will pass several beautiful lakes on our hike including Lake Helene, Lake Odessa and Fern Lake. We will also pass Fern Falls and The Pool. The elevation gain on the trip is about 1,200 feet. This is achieved in the beginning of the hike as we ascend from Bear Lake to Lake Helene. Thereafter, the trip will be downhill back to the parked cars.

I am very interested in the historic lodges of Rocky Mountain National Park that have long since been removed. This trip will take us to the sites of several of these lodges including The Bear Lake Lodge, Fern Lake Lodge, Forest Inn at The Pool, The Brinwood, and Stead's Ranch. I will bring photos of these lodges and provide a brief history of each one.

Optional Side Trip - The Bear Lake Lodge was built in 1921 and closed in 1959. Thereafter, the lodge was abandoned. In 1966, the lodge was carefully dismantled and relocated to the Elk Meadow Lodge and RV Resort on Highway 66 just prior to being razed. If the group is interested, we could stop by a take a look inside the former Bear Lake Lodge following our hike.

Notes

This is a joint trip with the Shining Mountains Group (Caroline Schmiedt), so additional participants will be able to sign up with that leader.
