Details

Thunder Butte, not to be confused with Elk Mtn's Thunder Pyramid (although both are allegedly named for "the counter attack from the sky") is another of those big granite pop ups in the Hayman burn area south of Buffalo Creek.  It is the high point of Douglas County and is so listed in a Colorado county highpointer book.  The usual approach (recommended by the book and taken by all CMC trips in the last 10 years - except one by this leader) is from the SW but this trip will take an eastern approach from Hwy-67 between Deckers and Westcreek, farther distance and twice the elevation gain.  This all off trail route climbs right from the car to an east-west ridge E of the summit intersecting the mountain's NE ridge.  We then follow the NE ridge to the summit, at one point loosing about 300' of elevation which we must make up on the return.  The leader attempted this route on an exploratory trip in 2018 which was foiled by poor route selection, fresh snow on the ground, and approaching weather.  On the return a much better route was discovered which we will follow on this trip. The CalTopo link for the route  is here https://caltopo.com/m/DNF1  This route is a strenuous and persistent 1000'/mile all the way and the upper part of the route is exploratory because we did not get that far on the previous attempt.
