John Raich,

Red Mountain Open Space, about 25 miles north of Fort Collins, consists of open terrain with red and tan sandstone rocks, small canyons, sandy washes, rolling grasslands and shrublands. Evidence of human habitation 12,000 years ago has been found in the area and people have lived and worked here since then. The Open Space is usually accessible for hikers March through November. It has no entrance fee.

We will take a loop hike on several well-maintained trails (Bent Rock, Ruby Wash, Salt Lick, and Sinking Sun Trails) through a variety of interesting terrain (canyons, open grasslands, washes) for about 8 miles, with possible short side trips added. In case of serious winter weather conditions, we plan to reschedule the hike.

Bring suitable footwear (hiking boots are suggested, especially if there is snow on the ground), headgear, gloves, clothing for wintry and windy conditions, lunch or snacks, water (there is no drinkable water along the route so bring all you expect to drink, at least 2 liters are suggested).
