Location

Depart promptly 6am from the Wooly Mammoth Park and Ride, Section BB, across from the gas station - fyi: there are NO facilities at the trailhead!

We will start the hike at the Coon Hill Trailhead. To access this trailhead, pull off I-70 immediately after exiting the Eisenhower Tunnel on the west side and park in the parking area on the right.

Gas cost will be divided equally among all participants in each car

Don't forget to bring your Ten Essentials and this will be early October - cold pre-winter conditions are possible. We are assuming that you have experience hiking above treeline in adverse conditions - this is not a hike with technical challenges but it will be a full day with considerable time above treeline; this is a good description of our hike: https://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=19731

. you will need to be prepared with food & fluids, appropriate gear/layers: required items: full rain gear (jacket and pants) & waterproof hiking boots

Details

This is an on and off trail, fun peak with views all around. We'll see the Gore, Ten Mile, Williams Fork, and Front Range.

Start at west end of the Eisenhower Tunnel, hike north on the Straight Creek Trail to the ridge, Most of the hike is on the continental divide, off-trail hiking on the undulating ridge line to Hagar Mtn. At Hagar Mtn there is some scrambling to the false summit, and then a short airy Class 3 scramble to the summit. Those of you who are wary of exposure can stop at the false summit and not attempt the final climb to the summit.

On returning we will follow the same ridgeline further south, mostly off-trail hiking on the tundra along the ridgeline, getting an overview of the Loveland Ski Area, From there, we will take the well established Straight Creek Trail from the ridge down the west side of the continental divide to the Coon Hill Trailhead.
