TO CARPOOL, meet at 8 am at Office Max in Silverthorne, Exit 205. Park far away from the stores and look for a black F150 truck. Arrive a few minutes early to arrange carpooling to Boreas Pass Road trailhead for Baker's Tank trail.
If you wish to carpool from the east or west, please let me know by private email, and I will put you in touch with other similar requests so that you can make your own arrangements.
For questions about mandatory gear, please call Barbara at 978-460-1752.
Starting elevation is 10,350' and the highest point is 11,050'. Expect lots of snow with the predicted storms this week. We may have to break trail, and with a large group, this will be easier to do.
This loop starts by following Baker's Tank trail through the woods for about 3.5 miles, with a steady but comfortable ascent. It brings us to the historic Baker's Tank, with stellar views of Bald Mt.
Once at Baker's Tank, we will descend via Boreas Pass Road, which brings us back to the trailhead. If you are new to snowshoeing, or have sore hip flexors, you will welcome this gentle and kind descent. We will have continuous views to the Tenmile Range.
Expected time is +/- 6 hours, depending on snow conditions.
The trails are on southwest facing slopes with low slope angles, so we should have little avalanche exposure. However, I will re-evaluate conditions after the new snowfall, and if it seems unsafe, I will cancel this hike.
Snowshoes and adequate winter gear are mandatory. Please bring your 10 essentials, including warm layers, extra gloves, headlamp with fresh batteries, and map and compass. If you have questions about gear, please call me.
Expect a final email on Sunday 12/1 about meeting time, weather and avalanche conditions, and required gear. I will also send a caltopo map.
Snowshoes are mandatory. Microspikes are optional, and probably not needed.
