Details

This is a snowshoe trip, where we will start our hike at Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.  From the Bear Lake Trailhead turn right and follow the Bear Lake Loop trail to the Flattop Mountain trail.  Follow the Flattop Mountain Trail for .9 miles to the junction with the Fern Lake Trail.  Follow the Fern Lake Trail as it climbs steadily through the forest along the northern flank of Flattop Mountain.  The last mile will be near timberline where we may have some wind.  Lake Helene rests below Notchtop Mountain, which rules the scene with its magnificent characteristic notch.  We will have lunch above the lake in the trees.  Most likely we will be snowshoeing at around 1 1/2 miles per hour.  If the trail is packed down we may use microspikes and carry our snowshoes, which will allow for an easier hike.  You should have both snowshoes, spikes and winter clothing appropriate to the day.   A map of the route can be found using a free CalTopo Map application (Caltop download here https://caltopo.com/) and using this weblink: https://caltopo.com/m/A2VP.  As the trip gets closer, I will provide weather forecasts, trail conditions and a map of the area with the route highlighted in a PDF  Please bring a RMNP Park Pass if you have one.

There is an optional social stop on the way drive back.
