Details

The group will go to the beacon/transceiver practice area at Hidden Valley in RMNP. We will break into small teams to practice finding the buried beacons in the practice area. Participants can choose to participate on skis or snowshoes, note the CMC system does not allow me to list the trip as both :-). After practicing a few times we will split up into a ski group and a snowshoe group to take a short trip up the hill to have some fun.

Note the trip leader is NOT a qualified instructor. This trip is intended to be a practice session for people that have already taken avalanche training. You will need to bring a transceiver/beacon and probe. You should also bring a shovel for our ski/snowshoe run. However, note that even thought the beacons are set up so you can detect them with a probe, you are not  allowed to dig up the beacons. We will all be practicing in small teams and critiquing each other’s performance. Since it is practice I will be referring to my AIARE Field book and going through the check list each time. As practice I will also be reviewing with the group the avalanche report discussing the types of problems, the location of problems and what we should do to avoid an incident. Once again the trip leader is NOT a qualified expert, we will be doing this evaluation as a group so we can all practice what we have all learned in AIARE training course taught by qualified individuals. Those who have not taken an AIARE course are welcome, but they should note this trip will only allow them to preview/review search techniques in a group setting and should NOT be thought of as a substitute for taking an AIARE approved course.
