- Description: This one-night backpack trip will take us into the Macey Creek drainage on the east side of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. We’ll be slipping by right under the noses of the holiday crowds gathered at the 14ers immediately to the south (Humboldt, Crestone Peak / Needle). Detailed route information will be provided via email prior to trip date.

- Itinerary:

— Day 1: Drive to trailhead, hike into the Macey Creek drainage. We’ll find a suitable campsite at the lower Macey Lake. If weather permits, we can do a little climb up Little Baldy or just relax and explore the lakes. (6 miles, 2500’ gain to lakes)

— Day 2: Climb on talus, some scrambling, to the 13697’ summit of Colony Baldy where we will take in the ever-dramatic views of the jagged spine of the Sangres. Descend the same route, pack up camp, hike out. (10 miles, 2300’ gain)

- General Requirements: Standard Wilderness Area regulations apply. No fees or permits required for overnight use in this area.

- Maps:; USGS 7.5’: Horn Peak and Crestone Peak
