John Raich,

The trip is an intermediate practice session and it intended for those who have completed a basic snow climbing course and have some prior experience. The Mahler Couloirs are at the head of the Lake Agnes cirque and are accessed from the Lake Agnes trailhead on the west side of the pass. The date of the climb is chosen so that the access road to the summer trailhead will be open to allow for a shorter approach hike. Parking at either the winter or summer trailhead requires a Colorado State Parks pass or a temporary permit purchased at the trailhead.

From the summer trailhead at 10,250', hike up to the lake, around the E side of the lake, and on mostly grassy slopes to the base of the couloir
at about 11,500'. The plan is to climb one of the 2a,b routes shown on the photo of Mt Mahler, Descent will be the Mt Mahler E ridge to the saddle at 12,000' and route 1. A descent of the ascent route is an option. The other Mahler couloirs (2c,d,e) are alternate routes.

Participants should have familiarity with self-arrest and the use of ice ax and crampons, ascending and descending steep snow, and rope tie-in and basic climbing gear. On this climb, we will discuss and practice snowpack assessment and stability, roped ascent and descent, snow anchors, belaying on snow, climbing with mixed rock/snow conditions, use of climbing gear. Gear needed: mountaineering boots, ice ax, crampons fitted to your boots, gaiters, climbing harness, helmet, a 120 cm (48") sling, a locking carabiner, pack large enough to carry some group gear.

The location and/or the date of the climb may change, depending on terrain, snowpack and weather conditions.
