Details

Corbett Peak (12,583) is a gentle mountain on the Elk Ridge with excellent views, and is located in the southern Gore Range.

We will climb via the Colorado Trail from Camp Hale.  Just past the switchbacks, we will go off trail to climb northeast to Corbett Peak.  We will then descend the gentle ridge of Corbett in a southeasterly direction to Kokomo Pass, and make our final descent on the Colorado Trail.

The route is very exposed to sun, but water is in ample supply when we are on the CT near the Cataract Creek.  We will bring a water filter to fill up on the descent.  Please carry enough for the ascent to minimize overall climbing time.

There are two stream crossings that might become deeper and faster.  Poles will help, be prepared to remove boots if necessary.  On a recent scouting trip in early June, there was still a lot of snow on north facing slopes that will melt.  The deep soft snow also turned us around about 0.5 miles before Kokomo Pass.  Doable, but postholing was not appealing!  This should also melt.  Hence, the upper portion of this route is "exploratory".

The pace is moderate and steady, and will be tailored to meet group needs.  We are not fast.

Notes

Please be prepared for hot warm sunny exposure, wind and cooler temps at the higher elevations, and bring your ten essentials.  Expect a long and hard day.

DIRECTIONS:

The trailhead is in Camp Hale Memorial area, and is at the "ACCESS TO CT" trailhead.

Camp Hale Memorial is on Route 24, about 3.5 miles north of Tennessee Pass.  From Leadville, travel on 24 west (in a northern direction).  From Minturn, travel on 24 east (in a southern direction).  Drive time to the trailhead from Rt 24 in Leadville is 45 minutes.

From Route 24, turn into Camp Hale Memorial area.  Enter Camp Hale on a dirt road.  The dirt road is in good condition for a 2WD low clearance vehicle.  Cross a wooden bridge, and continue straight to a T intersection.

Turn right onto Eagle River Road (FS 714 on caltopo map).  Drive 2.3 miles (go past the CT Kiosk) to a curve in the main road.  GO STRAIGHT here, and drive 0.6 miles to dirt road with a small grassy lot on the right.  As a landmark, there is a small wooden fence just ahead, and on the left.  Park here at the "Access to CT" trailhead.  Free parking.
