This trip kicks off CMC's Year of the Mountaineer celebration of RMNP's centennial. We will backpack into the Never Summer Mountains of eastern Grand County and the extreme northwest corner of RMNP.

First day, we will follow the route of an old wagon road to the Shipler Mine and Lulu City, along the Colorado River up the Kawuneeche Valley through Lodgepole Pine and Spruce forests. We will pass through Lulu City, a once booming mining town, established in 1890 and camp for two nights in Ditch Camp, a gently sloping open area surrounded by conifer trees. Ditch Camp is in the vicinity of one of the Grand Ditch construction camps used by Chinese laborers around 1900.

On Day Two we will dayhike to La Poudre Pass, where we will attempt to locate the precise headwater of the Colorado River. Twice that day we will return through Camp Ditch before venturing up two additional trails.

On Day three we return to the trailhead along the Grand Ditch Road. Time permitting we will take a side trip up Lake of the Clouds trail to see Dutch Town, to which miners were banned after getting kicked out of Lulu City for drunkenness.

This is a remote and rare CMC trip.
