The night will feature two powerful films: "JEAN" and "The Crash Reel," both spotlighting athletes at the highest levels of their respective sports who suffered major brain injuries, following their roads to recovery.

"JEAN" is a short film about Jean Dempsey, a local climber who learned to climb through the Colorado Mountain Club and quickly became one of the top female climbers in the world in the 70s. Jean's climbing accomplishments include the first female free climb ascents of the Naked Edge and the Diamond. In the blink of an eye, Jean went from being one of the world's best female rock climbers, to lying in a bed; paralyzed, in a coma, with a massively fractured skull. A result of a rock fall many claim have been caused by the selfish, arrogant, actions of two other climbers above.

Since her accident, Jean has not only continued to climb, but works tirelessly as a community climbing advocate and open space volunteer. Jean's career moved from climbing to physical therapy, where she worked 25 years as a therapist, with over half those years in cancer care. Now in her retirement, she shares her time, energy and love with hospice care patients in Boulder.

We will be lucky enough to be joined by Jean Dempsey, who will be giving a short presentation and holding a Q&A after the film!

The second film, "The Crash Reel", is an award-winning documentary that features Kevin Pearce, who was at the top of his sport as a professional snowboarder, winning X Games medals in Big Air, Slopestyle, and SuperPipe. Representing the United States Olympic team and training for the 2010 Winter Olympics, Kevin took a major fall in a training session that resulted in a traumatic brain injury and the end of his professional career as a snowboarder. Kevin's road to recovery has brought to light his potential to transform the experience of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) into a source of inspiration, education, and awareness. Using the visibility generated from his success as a professional snowboarder, and this award winning documentary, Kevin co-founded the LoveYourBrain foundation, a non profit organization that is working to connect, educate, and empower people to live a brain healthy lifestyle.
