Lecture September 18,  6:00PM-9:00PM

Field Days September 21-22, all day starting early

This class is required for completion of the Basic Alpine Climbing Certificate. The prerequisite for this class is Basic Climbing.

Intermediate Rock Climbing follows our Basic Climbing course. We teach the basics of safe rock climbing in the outdoors. Intermediate Rock focuses on climbing safety: equipment (and using it properly), communication, belaying, lowering, and rappelling. But, of course, no climbing course would be complete without learning how to actually climb--you'll get that in Intermediate Climbing, too.

In one indoor evening and two outdoor days, you'll have plenty of opportunities to learn, practice, and climb in a fun and social setting. And you'll meet plenty of other new climbers, too. But don't wait until it's too late. We can only take 24 students in each Session of Intermediate Climbing, so sign up today.

Q: What might I learn in this class?

A: You will have the opportunity to learn the basic safety concepts of technical (roped) rock climbing: equipment, donning a harness, tying-in to the climbing rope, communication, belaying, lowering a climber, and rappelling. You will also have the opportunity to learn climbing techniques from our cadre of experienced rock climbing Instructors.

Q: Are there any prerequisites for this course?

A: Basic Climbing is a prerequisite. And a modicum of fitness (be able to hike a mile or so to the crag) and a desire to learn to climb.

Q: Is there any Required gear?

A: There is no required gear for Intermediate Climbing, other than clothes which are appropriate for the weather in the mountains in June, and which will be comfortable to climb in. We recommend shoes/hiking boots that are comfortable for the ~1 mile hike in to the crag. Rock climbing shoes are also recommended (see below). We will provide all other necessary equipment.

Q: What skills will I practice in this class?

A: Indoor Night #1 - 6-9pm: Most of the evening will be spent practicing rappelling. We will also work on refining the belay technique learned in Introduction to Climbing. And we will look at the finer points of climbing movement.

Field Days: You will use all of these skills while climbing, belaying, and rappelling.

Q: What books are good on the subject of rock climbing?

A: Craig Luebben's "Rock Climbing: Mastering Basic Skills" is a good basic book.

Q: What skills can I practice prior to class?

A: Knots: Fig8 Retrace, Barrel Knot, Autoblock

Attendance/Completion Policy

Students must attend all lectures and field days to receive credit for completing the course. Students will not be allowed to continue beyond a missed lecture/field day. Students must also demonstrate mastery of the both the prerequisites and the skills taught in the immediate class. If such mastery cannot be demonstrated, the student will be asked to repeat the course. If a student cannot demonstrate mastery of the prerequisites the student will not be allowed to continue in the class.

Note that classes sometimes show "Sessions"; Basic Climbing Session A, for example. Sessions are simply alternate dates of the same class. In other words, you may choose Session A or Session B, depending on which dates work best for you. You do not have to complete both Session A and Session B.

Cancellation Policy:

Classes must have minimum four students signed up and requisite number of instructors. If either number is too low class may be cancelled.

Refund Policy:
